Run by the South East Asian Institute for Global Studies, the Thai and Southeast Asian Studies Program at Payap University is a one- or two-semester academic program for students
primarily interested in becoming proficient in the Thai language and knowledgeable
about Thai culture, the greater Mekong Sub-Region, and Southeast Asia in general. However, we also offer advanced language
courses on a more limited basis for students already somewhat proficient in Thai
language*. The program offers a well-developed language
curriculum, required and elective courses in a wide range of disciplines,
and extensive field trips, excursions, and cultural activities.
Thai Studies students explore Thailand from the inside.
First term students take six credits of
either first or second year-level Thai
language, a three-credit course on the Cultural Foundations of
Thai Society, and one or two three-credit elective courses. Elective
courses are generally drawn from the following subject areas:
Sociology/Anthropology, Religion, History/Political Science, and
Fine Arts. Please note that electives vary from term to term depending
upon faculty availability and expertise and can only be confirmed
approximately one and a half months prior to the start of each
term.
*(Prospective students with advanced Thai language skills:
Upper-level language classes can be arranged upon
request. However, at the current point in time we can only offer
you one upper level language course for 3.0 credits (45 hours of
instruction) per term of study. Please contact us further if this
applies to you and we will provide more details about the various
opportunities we can offer for advanced language study, depending
upon your current Thai language competency and areas of interest.)
Students enrolling in a second term continue with six credits of intermediate or advanced Thai language and two or three elective courses. Second-term students may also work with Payap University faculty to develop independent study courses. Preparation for independent study courses must begin mid-way through the first term.
Registration deadlines for students from Payap University's
exchange partners are set by each institution. A complete list of
our exchange partners can be found below. Check with your Study Abroad office to find out when to apply. Students from colleges and universities without an exchange agreement and independent studentsmust apply by 30 April for the term beginning in September, or by 15 October
for the term beginning in January. Application materials and instructions can be
