Students from Payap University's exchange partners should contact their Study Abroad advisors for information on how to apply to the Thai and Southeast Asian Studies Certificate Program through their home institutions.  For a complete list of our exchange partners please follow the link to our Introduction page.

Students interested in direct-enrollment as independent students in the Thai Studies program should download the following forms (Acrobat format):

and mail completed applications and a US$40 application fee (via bank wire transfer to Payap University or paid in cash on campus) to the Office of International Affairs. Because the completed application requires signed forms and the application fee, we cannot accept applications by fax or over the Internet.

Criteria for Admission
The Thai Studies program is interested in students who:

  • Have completed at least one full year of college or university study prior to the start of the program, with a minimum GPA of at least 2.5;
  • Have two strong letters of recommendation from current instructors, advisors, or employers; and
  • Have a demonstrated academic interest in Thai or Southeast Asian culture.

Acceptance and Visa Request Letters
Accepted students will receive a letter of admission outlining the steps required to confirm enrollment and obtain the appropriate visa. Upon receipt of a non-refundable deposit of US$250 (applied to the program fee for direct-enroll students and waived for students from exchange partner institutions), Payap will issue a visa request letter to be submitted with the visa application. Both the letter and the visa application must sent by the student directly to the nearest consulate or embassy of the Royal Thai government, not to Payap University.

Application Deadline
Applications for any fall term must be received by our office no later than April 30th. Applications for any spring term must be received no later than October 15th. Late applications will be considered only a case-by-case basis. Acceptance into the program is not guaranteed until a student receives an official letter of acceptance from the program.

Payment of Program Fees
All program fees must be paid in full prior to the start of the program. For current fees, please email Adam Dedman, Director, Office of International Affairs, at: adedman@payap.ac.th

The program fee includes tuition, university fees, international student fees, and the room, board, and activities fee. It does not include books, personal expenses, or travel to/from Chiang Mai.

Students from exchange partner institutions who are participating under reciprocal exchanges must pay an activity fee of US$500 directly to Payap University prior to the start of the program.

Other Expenses

  • Health and Travel Insurance.
All students are required to obtain or maintain private health insurance valid for the entire period of the program. Students are also required to obtain international student travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation, medical evacuation, and repatriation expenses. Two companies that specialize in student travel are MyISIC and Student Universe. For health insurance there are many travel insurance providers where students can purchase the necessary coverage such as HTH Worldwide and Betins. For a complete listing of such insurance providers, go to http://www.nafsa.org/students.sec and click "NAFSA Yellow Pages" and then "Insurance and Medical Assistance."

  • Books and Course Materials.
Thai Studies students should plan to spend approximately US$25-30 per course for books and course materials fees. Students rarely spend more than US$100 for these materials.
